Eye Movement Desensitization Repressing (EMDR) EMDR is a unique method for processing past traumata and transforming emotionally disturbing cognitions. Oftentimes we are unable to process and integrate old trauma as the emotions have not been physiologically integrated. EMDR is a mind-body process enabling integration. For example, aclient focuses on the disturbing image (visual memory), negative thought, and body sensations while simultaneously moving his/her eyes back and forth following the eye scanner for 20-30 seconds or more, depending upon the need of the client. I also use auditory tones, tapping, or other types of tactile stimulation. The type of dual attention and the length of each set is customized for each client. This amazing technique allows the client to quickly process various pieces of the trauma. The client may relive aspects of the trauma while moving eyes back and forth. The neurological movement allows for emotional integration. The client may then find him/herself suddenly finding a resolution within. (This is usually quite gratifying as most persons cannot understand why these traumatizing memory patterns continue to disturb them when they’ve been able to process other things in their lives.) Some clients may have old disturbing beliefs (such as an irrational fear of vomiting in public) and find that in two or three sessions the fear has been reduced or that it no longer represents a problem. The negative energy has disappeared. I typically find that EMDR, combined with hypnosis and a humanistic approach, quickly resolves old problems while opening new doors. I was certified as an EMDR practitioner in 1994 and have been using it in my practice since then. |
